Forensic Chemistry at MSU

Local cub scouts visited our lab to learn abour forensic science. We showed the cubs how to dust for
fingerprints, cast shoe-prints, and examine animal hairs under the microscope. The cubs used their new
found skills to help us find out who attacked Sandra Snakekeeper at the Michigan State Zoo!

Jamie and Patty attended this year's ACS meeting (Philadelphia,PA) just before school started.
Patty presented a poster on her research developing a microwave-assisted extraction procedure to
extract organic impurities from seized MDMA tablets.
Midwestern Association of Forensic Scientists Fall Meeting, Des Moines IA, Sep 2008
This year, we traveled to the American Academy of Forensic Sciences Annunal Conference in
Denver, CO. Tiffany and Christy were attending the conference for the first time and Patty and Jamie
presented their research. MSU was again one of the best represented academmic instituitions at the
conference with 13 presentations.
The Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy was held in Chicago this
year. John and Melissa attended this conference and presented posters on their research. John's poster
involved chemometric analysis of diesel fuels while Melissa presented on her work involving chemical
characterization of Salvia divinorum.
